RED SKY IN THE MORNING... POET'S WARNING

By Alex Wharton | Illustrations by Ian Morris
Published 23rd January 2025 | ISBN 9781915444806

Red Sky in the Morning, Poet’s Warning is the fourth collection of mysterious, humorous, philosophical and charming poetry for young people by Alex Wharton, Children’s Laureate Wales. From Poems that describe ‘Wild Boys’ who live alone in the woods to poems about ‘Time’ and meeting an astronaut, there is something here for everyone! These poems reflect on nature’s happenings, through observation and experience, but not forgetting to transport the reader to many magical, musical and imaginative worlds.

2024 WAS A BRIGHT WORKING YEAR.....

Poetry at the heart of it. Taking me to many people and many places. Lifting me up in harder times. Giving me joy, light and comfort. I'm incredibly grateful to have connected and collaborated with everyone that I have. I'm thankful for all of the support.
I wish everyone a wonderful year ahead, each day a magnificent moment and opportunity to absorb the world anew.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

CARNEGIE MEDAL 2025 NOMINATED

CONGRATULATIONS ALEX

Doughnuts, Thieves And Chimpanzees

Illustrated by Rhi Smith

Published by @fireflypress.

"I wrote this book to shine a light on a variety of poetic styles, song writing and writing raps, and how they all bloom from the same place. The book encourages collaboration, empowering readers to tell their own stories. It's a small book that sings brightly off the page and many of the ideas within this book have found themselves onto the stage in collaboration with the wonderful BALLET CYMRU brought to music by the brilliant @frankmoonmusic and @bevleeharling - it's a celebration of creativity, joy, imagination and self expression.

Thanks to the wonderful librarians for recognising the book's potential with this nomination."

In the summer of 2021 I facilitated a poetry workshop with students from Hay Primary school. Together, we wrote a poem for Her Royal Highness, The Duchess Of Cornwall. And the Children read the poem to her during a very special visit to the Hay Festival. It was a brilliant experience and I was very proud of how the pupils performed their poem with confidence and excitement. I also got to talk to her about poetry, my book and my plans for the future. All in all, this was an inspirational day and I'm very grateful to have had this opportunity and to have met lots of lovely people on the day.

Shortlisted For The North Somerset Teachers Book Award.

Making the Shortlist for this Incredible award was fantastic. Along with the splendid poets: Coral Rumble, Shauna Darling Robertson and Laura Mucha who won the poetry category with her excellent book Dear Ugly Sisters And Other Poems. Huge Congratulations to Laura Mucha and to everyone for making the shortlist - and the long list.
